Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 18, 2026
Essential ("we", "us", or "our") operates mobile applications. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to all apps published by Essential.
Apps Covered by This Policy
This policy applies to the following apps:
- Kawari Keyboard — AI translation keyboard (iOS)
- Tomari — App blocker (iOS)
When we release new apps, we will update this list.
Information We Collect
We collect minimal information necessary to provide and improve our services:
- Device information: Device model, operating system version, and language settings. This is collected automatically to ensure compatibility and deliver relevant content.
- Device identifiers for advertising: If you use the free version with ads, our ad partner may collect device identifiers, IP address, and ad interaction data to serve and measure advertisements.
- Purchase data: If you subscribe to a premium plan, an anonymous user identifier and purchase records are processed by our subscription partner to manage your entitlements. We do not receive your payment details.
- Usage and diagnostic data: App interactions, app and device information, and crash diagnostics may be collected to understand feature usage, monitor reliability, and fix errors. This data does not include text typed with the keyboard, translation content, or which apps you lock in Tomari.
- Local preferences: Settings such as your selected language pair and tone preference in Kawari Keyboard, or your blocking settings in Tomari, are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to any server.
What We Do Not Collect
We want to be clear about what we do not collect:
- Typed text: We do not collect, store, or transmit any text you type using our keyboard or inside our apps.
- Personal accounts: We do not require you to create an account, and we do not collect your name, email address, or other personal identifiers.
- Contacts or messages: We do not access your contacts, messages, photos, or any other personal data on your device.
Third-Party Services
Our apps use the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:
- Google AdMob — Serves advertisements in the free versions of our apps. AdMob may collect device identifiers, IP address, and interaction data. Google Privacy Policy
- Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics — Measures app usage and processes crash reports and diagnostics so we can improve stability. Firebase Privacy and Security
- RevenueCat — Manages in-app subscriptions. RevenueCat processes an anonymous user ID and purchase records. RevenueCat Privacy Policy
- Apple — Processes payments through the App Store on iOS. Apple Privacy Policy
- Google — Processes payments through Google Play on Android. Google Privacy Policy
App-Specific Data Practices
Each app may handle data differently depending on its features. This section details the specific practices for each app.
Kawari Keyboard
Kawari Keyboard requires "Full Access" permission on iOS. This permission is needed to enable the translation feature to function within the keyboard extension. Even with Full Access enabled:
- Translation is performed entirely on your device using Apple's on-device translation framework. Your words never leave your phone.
- We do not use network access to transmit keystrokes or typed content.
- Network access is used for loading advertisements (free version), verifying subscription status, measuring app usage, and sending crash diagnostics.
- No additional personal data is collected beyond the common information described above.
Tomari
Tomari uses Apple's Screen Time framework to lock the apps and websites you choose. It keeps your data on your device:
- Blocked apps and websites: Apps you choose are represented by opaque tokens issued by Apple. We cannot see which apps they refer to. These tokens, the nicknames you give them, and the websites you add are stored only on your device.
- Unlock history: When you open or hold back from a locked app, Tomari records the time, the nickname you gave the app, the unlock length, and the reason you picked. This history powers the Record screen and is stored only on your device.
- Microphone and speech recognition: Speaking missions use the microphone and Apple's on-device speech recognition to check the line you read aloud. Audio is processed on your device, is not recorded, and is never sent to us or any server. If your device does not support on-device recognition, Tomari switches to a typing mission instead.
- Camera: The "speak with your face" mission shows a live camera preview so you can see yourself. The video is not recorded, stored, or transmitted.
- Notifications: Weekly record reminders are scheduled locally on your device.
- Usage and crash data: Tomari sends anonymous usage events, such as completing onboarding, reaching the first unlock, and viewing or purchasing a plan, along with crash reports, to Google Firebase. These are not linked to your identity and are not used for tracking. They never include which apps you lock, their nicknames, your unlock reasons, or anything you say or type during a mission.
- Network access is used for loading advertisements (free version), verifying subscription status, measuring app usage, and sending crash diagnostics.
As we release additional apps, their specific data practices will be documented in this section.
Data Retention
We do not operate our own user database that stores personal data. Advertising, analytics, crash diagnostic, and subscription data are retained by the respective third-party service providers according to their own retention policies. Local preferences, and Tomari's blocking settings and unlock history, remain on your device until you delete the app.
Children's Privacy
Our apps are not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to remove that information.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
